Any conviction for DWI/DUI (except a juvenile DWI/DUI) results in surcharges of $1,000 per year for 3 years.  These motor vehicle surcharges are payable to the New Jersey Motor Vehicle commission's surcharge unit.

If you fail to pay these surcharges on time you may face a license suspension issued by the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission. Even if your DWI/DUI suspension period is over and you paid your restoration fee, your license will not be restored until you have either paid off the surcharge for the applicable year or have been caught up on any surcharge payment plan you may have entered.
